Late adulthood is a stage where there has to be a revision of possible selves (what we hope to be what we dread to be) and to find a way to manage and adapt between desired and achieved goals.A person might be vulnerable to depression and disdain. A person might be constantly feeling there was no purpose in their life and that they are not yet ready to die due to the unfulfilled goals in their lives. A person may be filled with arrogance and unfulfilled goals, a wish to go back in time and change life events, wishing to have a second chance. This achievement of emotional maturity and life achievements are reached through the personal interaction with society and the worldOn the other hand, despair is living in denial with a constant “sour grapes” feeling towards what life could have been. Someone who does not have regrets is someone that despite mistakes made in his or her, this person has learned from them and become wiser. Wisdom will be as having no regrets and peace of mind without any judgment having a universal reconciliation and accepting the future which is death.The previous stage is actually a culmination of one's achievement and contribution to descendants, and potentially future generations everywhere. It is to be satisfied and peaceful with one’s life efforts.The more an individual resolves the crises successfully, the healthier development will be. According to Erikson, this crisis is not a catastrophe but a turning point of increased vulnerability and enhanced potential. Each stage consists of a crisis that must be faced. In Erikson's theory, eight stages of development unfold as we go through the life span. Erikson emphasized developmental change throughout the human life span.
